Ask Rosalee: Getting my MOVE! on in New York

November 8, 2010

On Oct. 30 and 31 I was honored to do hair for  MOVE! at MoMa PS1 in Long Island City, New York. This two-day art and fashion explosion consumed all three floors of MoMA PS1. I was working on an Aveda team lead by the amazing Ricardo Dinis. Ricardo inspired me through his ease and down to earth demeanor. He is a master hairstylist and an amazing human being. I know I am better just from being around him and soaking up every bit I could. Ricardo put me on to do some of the most challenging tasks in hair for MOVE! I was doing fades(cutting men’s hair), applying bald caps, and using fake hair to create over-the-top looks. All in all, it was the best weekend of my life!

MOVE! featured a series of collaborative performances and temporary installations created by fourteen fashion designers paired with fourteen artists. The pairings included: Kalup Linzy and Diane von Furstenberg; Rob Pruitt and Marc Jacobs; Terence Koh and Italo Zucchelli (Calvin Klein Collection); Tauba Auerbach and Ohne Titel; Olaf Breuning and Cynthia Rowley; Brody Condon and Rodarte; Rashaad Newsome and Alexander Wang; Dan Colen and Proenza Schouler; David Blaine and Adam Kimmel; Jonah Bokaer and Narciso Rodriguez; The Cheryls and American Apparel; Ryan McNamara and Robert Geller; and TELFAR + Lizzie Fitch, Rhett LaRue, Fatima Al Qadiri, Ryan Trecartin, and Leilah Weinraub.

MOVE! is part of MoMA PS1’s Free Space, an ongoing program that provides gallery space for exhibitions, events, studios, rehearsals, and other live presentations for “uninhibited artistic exploration and fresh contemporary art programming.”

We are cutting a bald cap for the Terence Koh and Italo Zucchelli (Calvin Klein Collection) exhibit.

After applying bald caps we painted the guys silver.

We also did hair for the CHERYL’s/American Apparel exhibit! This was so much fun! The music was turned up high, glitter and fake hair were flying through the air and there were dance parties. It was a really fun experience!

We didn’t do hair for this exhibit but it was too cool not to post! I did get to meet Cynthia Rowley! She is super nice and very pretty.

Have confidence Dolls,  you are beautiful!
