Beauty Bites with Kati Corbett: Styling tricks for fine hair

February 16, 2010

Each month, beauty guru Kati Corbett weighs in on a timely topic—from hair advice, makeup tricks and the products you’ve got to try. Today’s subject: The top 3 tricks for styling fine hair.

1. Make sure you have the correct cut
I want to stress the importance of having the correct cut for your facial features. It’s more than just the shape of your face. It’s about showing off your best features. Focus on your eyes, cheekbones, or lips. Which do you want attention drawn to?

2. Choose the right products
Fine hair desires volume and movement. I highly recommend using a product that will amplify your hair. Pureology’s Blowdry Amplifier which is a part of the Volume Collection, was created for fine hair. To use this product, apply to wet hair before blow drying. Applying from scalp to ends. Short hair (above the chin) will use the size of a nickel. Medium to long hair (below the chin and past the shoulders) will use the size of a quarter.

3. Set your style
Hairspray is designed to set your style. I highly recommend Goldwell’s Big Finish Volume Spray. This hairspray won’t weigh down your fine hair. Some people choose a hard hold hairspray because the thought is that you need the strength to hold up limp hair. Be careful and note that a lot of heavy held products are just that—heavy. They may weigh your hair down and this is exactly what you don’t want. You’ll find that my recommendation is great for fine hair and is forgiving if you tend to style while you spray.
